Refugee Stories – Sandy, 30 from Nepal

Sandy is a 30-year-old refugee from Nepal who currently lives on the Island of Lesbos in Greece. She previously worked as a marketing manager in Nepal before switching to a career in Nursing to look after her grandmother when she fell ill. Sandy received a full sponsorship package to study fashion in India for two years at which time she married her husband Sonam. As Sandy and Sonam were different religions and casts, they were disowned by their families and left to fend for themselves in India. Due to a severe lack of economic opportunities in India, they obtained Visas to travel to Turkey which was easy as they had all the necessary documents for travel.

Things took a turn for the worse when Sandy was robbed in Turkey while planning a holiday to Belgium with her sister. She and her husband lost all their belongings which included five suitcases, jewellery, money, passports and documents. They were forced to stay in refugee camps in Turkey for about a year before relocating to the Island of Lesbos in Greece where they have been for about a year and a half.

Sandy has joined a passionate international team of refugee volunteers at House of Humanity where she has the responsibility for managing a large warehouse which has been renovated into a refugee community centre with a café, play centre for children, grocery store, donated clothes shop, gym, prayer area and a lounge and office area upstairs with a picturesque view of the ocean. Sandy and the other volunteers at House of Humanity are making a big difference in the lives of thousands of refugees on a daily basis.
